MBARARA. Hosts Mbarara Sports Club beat a high odds to emerge as the best team among nine on the seventh leg of the Uganda Golf Tour on July 20.

With an overflow to a 138-man field on the par-70 course, Mbarara still overcame the huge visiting numbers to pole 57 points on the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and Castle Lite-sponsored countrywide circuit.

Mbarara’s triumph was almost perfect as they had been spurred to the podium by lady captain Godlive Nayebare who emerged as overall lady winner with a score off 70 nett on count-back off handicap 27.

Big milestone
“It means a lot,” Nayebare told Daily Monitor as the merrymaking pitched during the 19th hole in Mbarara. “We have not been making it on other courses (on the Tour). So making it on our own home course is a very big milestone,” the lawyer stated. On a pretty tight nine-hole course, Nayebare delivered a birdie on Hole No.4 after some hard work. “The front nine was bad but I played well on the back nine.

“It was a difficult partly because it is my home course but I had also made a lot of practice,” added the lady who has only played golf for two and half-years.
Mbarara’s script was equally perfect on the men’s front where Ashraf Sekajja won 66 nett off handicap 18, only ten months into the game. “It was not easy,” he remarked after returning birdies on Holes No.3, No.5 and No.12, “The course was well maintained but it was so complicated with so many OBs but I kept my hands on my drivers,” he added.

Overall Tour leading club West Nile was second with 33 points while Namulonge got 12 points in third place.
