Champion: Mubikirwa keen to retain Mr Uganda crown

Mr Uganda Isaac Mubikirwa will not tolerate pretenders to his throne, come the time for defending the title he so much cherishes.

At the launch of the 2018 Mr Uganda Bodybuilding Championship, at Body Tempo Gym in Rubaga last week, Lameck Muwanga, who succeeded Mubikirwa in the Mr Kampala championship in June, also vowed to rid Mubikirwa of the country’s top prize.

Being the 2017 Mr Uganda champion, federation bylaws did not allow Mubikirwa to defend his Mr Kampala crown in 2018.
But he has warned Muwanga and whoever is plotting to conquer him on December 2, at Tropical Inn, Masaka. “Those guys have to make news, they have to talk, you know… no problem if he has improved but I’m also not resting, I have been equally working hard and next week, I will be very ready, God Willing,” Mubikirwa said.

It’s a year since Mubikirwa appeared on local stage. In May this year, he went to Germany with hopes, but for some issues, he said, he did not compete. And Muwanga, who controversially missed last year’s Mr Uganda event, boasts a bigger body mass. But Mubikirwa insists he has improved himself: “My conditioning is a bit better.”

He is also keen on securing a pro card but he said the process needs some financial back up. But he is keeping his hopes alive.

On the value of the Mr Uganda Championship, Mubikirwa said, “being the biggest bodybuilding event in the country it means so much to me, I really respect it.” On the competition’s outstanding performers walking away with just trophies and medals for, and no prize money, in a sport so expensive, he said: “We love the sport…”
