NCS aids Fencing ahead of global meets

Fencing is not an ordinary sport in Uganda but one that is highly rated at the Olympic Games.
As the country aims to meet that grade, the Uganda Fencing Association (UFA) is in awe of support from National Council of Sports (NCS) who aided them with logistical aid early this week.
NCS helped UFA receive equipment as they prepare for the Africa Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in Ghana in February. UFA will also send a team to the World Fencing Championships in USA in March.
“We have received one piece of equipment known as the fencing strips, which is the field of play, from the American Fencing Federation and yet to receive three others,” remarked Uganda Fencing Association general secretary Carolyne Adongo during a giveaway function at Lugogo on Tuesday.
“With this single piece at hand, we will now be able to hold the National Schools championships from which we will select the competitors to take part,” added Adongo. NCS is keen on growing lesser known disciplines like fencing and they plan to clear the three remaining sets of equipment. “We spent close to Shs18m for shipping and clearing the first piece,” said NCS General Secretary Dr Patrick Ogwel.
“I call for a pro-active programme to promote fencing in the whole country beginning from the grass root level. NCS also promises to help UFA in capacity building,” added Ogwel.
