She Cranes scoop bronze after ousting ‘powerless’ Kenya

CAPE TOWN. She Cranes will return home on Friday with a bronze medal thanks to a 61- 42 goals victory against neighbours Kenya.
Uganda won two games, lost two and got a walkover against Zimbabwe to finish third behind eventual champions South Africa and Malawi.
The She Cranes lost to both South Africa and Malawi with a three and four-goal margin respectively.
“We have improved a lot compared to our performance in the World Cup” said defender Joan Nampungu, who kept switching roles between Wing Defender and Goalkeeper during the different games at the tourney.
“South Africa and Malawi beat us with big margins in the World Cup but we have since managed to reduce the goals. It means we will be beat them soon,’ Nampungu asserted.
Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and Lesotho took fourth to seventh positions in that order. The 2019 Africa Netball Cup was also a pilot project for Netball South Africa to test their organisation skills ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.
Uganda’s chances of coming back to Cape Town in 2023 however hang in balance after consistently losing to lower ranked Malawi. If they slip out of the top six, the She cranes will need to play qualification games to return to Cape Town in 2023.
