KAMPALA. Champions Hima Cement Heathens and 9 Barrells Warriors kept their flawless records alive on Saturday, a week before they meet, to maintain first and second position in the Nile Special Stout Premiership.

Warriors who were up against Jinja Hippos showed steel to pip the visitors in what is already an early contender for match of the season. 13-6 down at the break, Warriors returned with the more ammunition and urge in a game saw the exchange hands up to four times. Richard Kinyai enhanced his growing reputation at Warriors with a massive 21 points to end up man of the match, hugely thanks to his educated boot that also sweetly struck one of the best drop goals you’ll see this season.

“It was one of those games you cannot afford to blink. They kept running at us and at some stage we had no answers until we calmed down and played mature game. Kinyai’s kicking too cannot go without being mentioned,” said Warriors’ captain Akera Komakech.

Heathens were on song with five tries with captain Michael Wokorach, Gerald Sewankambo, and Kenneth Okong all on the score sheet to beat Plascon Mongers 34-13 and stretch their lead at the top by two points. Despite the victory, coach Mohammed Athiyo thought they were a bit sluggish compared to before the 28 day Christmas break.

“The break slowed down everyone and not just us. But we’ll take the win and the bonus point makes it better. Mongers did play well and they were right to feel disappointed after the game,” said Athiyo.

Betway Kobs continued their surge to the top with another bonus point 31-0 at Rams as they prepare to host Stanbic Pirates on Saturday. The latter recorded their biggest win of the season, 65-5, at the expense of Impis who are still looking for a win in the top flight.
