Lekuru targets powerful end to 7s season

In the last two years, Emilly Lekuru’s star has shone brightly throughout the tournaments she has played. Last year, she made her national team debut during in the Rugby Afrique 7s in Tunisia, where Uganda finished fourth. Lekuru was Uganda’s top scorer with 17 points (three tries and a conversion).
At this year’s tournament in Botswana, she again led the team, touching down thrice. Uganda finished second after losing 29-07 to Kenya. However, it is during the ongoing national 7s circuit where the Black Pearls’ player has stood head and shoulders above the rest. Her robust runs and eye for the white chalk have seen her top the scoring charts in all the four 7s legs so far-Buffaloes (22 points), Rujumba Memorial (31 points), Rhinos Coronation (27 points) and last weekend’s Kitaka Memorial where she tied with Entebbe Ladies’ Christine Akello on 15 points. It is no wonder that the Black Pearls have won the women’s 7s championship, their first ever, with a full leg to spare. Next on the horizon is the season-ending Kyadondo leg over the weekend.
So, what lies behind this rich vein of form? “I have been working hard and learning. In the past, my knee was troublesome but now it’s getting stable. I have also dedicated a lot of time to the gym,” she answered. “On Saturday, I want to keep going strong. I want to finish the 7s season on a high note. Then I can see what the 15s season has in stock for me and the team,” she added. It will thus be unsurprising that Lekuru will again be the centre of attraction at Kyadondo.
