KAMPALA. Sports as unifying factor is a path that has been trodden by many across the world as evidenced by Dider Drogba and his Ivorian teammates in trying to end a civil war in 2005.
It is a path the Indian Association of Uganda and Jinja residents appear to be taking after a longstanding disagreement over the ownership of Kakindu Stadium.

The two parties finally struck a compromise over the weekend with sport playing a key part.
Led by sports philanthropist Mohamed Vaheed the Indian Association Uganda General Secretary and LC III chairman Mubarak Kirunda, the two parties agreed to end the dispute over Kakindu stadium that has dragged in court since 2010.

A trust jointly managed by Indian association and Jinja elders was formed to develop the stadium only for the purpose of sports facilities which will be used for the whole Jinja community.
“Regarding development we are ready to work with everyone. The Indian association showed they are ready to support us and we are ready to move with them,” Kirunda said of the current Indian Association.

The meeting also involved Jinja Municipal Council (JMC) Hippos owner Faizal Muhammad while the Indian Association team also had Chairman Mohan Rao and Vice chairman Sanjeev Patel and trcasurer Divyang Patel.
Having earlier been approached by JMC, Vaheed who owns three cricket clubs in addition to his roles with badminton and table tennis agreed to become the patron of JMC and delivered shs10m worth of sportswear and equipment.
