Bamweyana firm but SC Villa in danger

Stuck in a rut: SC Villa coach Bamweyama (L) and players Alishe and Serumaga

KAMPALA. SC Villa coach Douglas Bamweyana was left clinging onto his side’s performance after suffering an opening second round defeat to URA on Saturday.

The record 16-time league champions lost 1-0 to stay just two points above the relegation places.
“The first 20 minutes I thought we were in control. We relaxed a little and that allowed them to play their long balls. We made one basic mistake but other than that they were not threatening. I’m happy with the boys’ efforts. They worked so hard in trying to get the result we needed,” Bamweyana insisted.

His team though were largely toothless on the day with league leading scorer Bashir Miranda restricted to a couple of long range efforts by the league’s best defence that has conceded six goals in 16 games.

In a game of little goalmouth action, they fell to a goal from one of their former players with Paul Mbowa heading in Saudi Kyeyune’s corner kick seven minutes before half time.

Villa have had an underwhelming season winning just two games thus far and showed little improvement from their first round performances despite naming three of their new recruits Asuman Alishe, Sulaiman Majanjalo and goalkeeper Saudi Keni in their starting lineup. The win meanwhile put URA in fifth position with 25 points in what was the second game without Sam Simbwa on the bench with the coach serving a four game touchline ban.
“The most important thing was us getting three points,” URA assistant coach George Lutalo said.
