Coach Golola seeks positive response after Villa setback

Wake up call. Vipers strikers Fahad Bayo and new boy Paul Mucureezi were silent against SC Villa on Friday. Golola wants a quick response from his players following Friday’s 1-0 loss at home. PHOTO by JOHN BATANUDDE.

Edward Golola and his Vipers charges must be feeling the heat after falling to nemesis SC Villa 1-0 at home on Friday.
Two losses and three draws in 18 Uganda Premier League matches would be no great problem in any routine season, but second placed KCCA’s renaissance ultimately makes slip-ups like the Villa loss a huge concern.
Over the weekend, Golola admitted they are still taking in the aching defeat that saw them come second best in every attempt.
“We will bounce back from this. It should hurt. We certainly don’t want to lose anywhere, and it hurts, but this isn’t a 1-0 like any other.
“If we cannot pick ourselves while still top of the table, what will happen if we are not? I know it is a massive disappointment but what is important now is how we respond to that,” the two-time league winning coach told the club website.
Up next for Vipers in the league is a tricky trip to Bombo Barracks to face Mbarara City, another team that is gradually caving out as an awkward opponent for them.
Brian Ssenyondo’s Mbarara City that hasn’t lost to Vipers in the last three league meetings can pass for giant slayers and they will look to take advantage of the Venoms’ dip on January 28.
“We certainly shouldn’t let it (the Villa loss) consume us to the point it has any effect on us going forward, other than analysing the mistakes and correcting them.
We are responsible for the things we did wrong on the football pitch, the decisions we didn’t get right,” Golola stressed.
Vipers have a thrilling Uganda Cup distraction on Friday that will see them play neighbours Kajjansi United on the round of 64.
