Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel has been confirmed as the new National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary, replacing Nicholas Muramagi.
Daily Monitor understands his position was confirmed at the start of this month. The position fell vacant following an accident to his predecessor Muramagi that left him on life support. The position was then advertised in April this year.
But having served as assistant general secretary under Muramagi and later as acting general secretary over the past year, Ogwel was always favourite for the job. He joined NCS in 2017 and has witnessed the drastic increase in sports funding from government over the past two years since joining as assistant general secretary. That trend is set to continue with the sports budget expected to increase to Shs26b in the next financial year from Shs17b allocated previously.
“My immediate task will be to continue to push for improving funding to sports, improving governance in National Associations,” Ogwel responded when sounded out about the development.
He also mentioned sports branding/awareness, sports infrastructure development and partnerships with international sports organisations and governments as the other key issues that he will focus on.
Ogwel who has previously served as an administrator in football and basketball will hold the position for the next three years.
NCS is a statutory organization established in 1964, to develop, promote and control all forms of sports activities in the country.
