Express sack Kisala, appoint Ssimwogerere

George Ssimwogerere

Kampala- Express yesterday turned to club legend and former coach George Ssimwogerere as their next coach after parting company with Kefa Kisala.

No details were given over the length of his contract but the former club captain will be making a return to the club 13 years after his last stint that saw him help the club finish third. He then went for a month-long coaching course in September but was forced to throw in the towel following pressure from fans after his side lost to City Lads in the opening game of the 2006-2007 season.

Little has changed since then. Kefa Kisala, who assumed the caretaker role in his absence, eventually replaced him but was one of five other coaches to take charge in the next 12 months.

Kisala’s tenure has this time round lasted eight months and he leaves the club, which survived relegation on the last day of last season with 21 points from 17 games.

While the tally represents a slight improvement having accumulated 15 points at the same stage last season, there was a lack of structure in the way the team has played under his tutelage this season.

The decision to replace him then appeared to be made in the immediate aftermath of Monday’s 2-0 home loss to Police.

The result left the team in 10th position just nine points above Nyamityobora the team in the final relegation spot with the club losing their last two games.

In Ssimwogerere they acquire a well-traveled coach whose last known posting was at Rwandan side Musanze in 2016.

He also guided the now defunct Kira Young to the topflight league before leaving the club in 2014 before he was appointed Somalia national team coach later that year.
