Goalie Ssekagya readies for CS Constantine clash after anxious start

KAMPALA. It has been a remarkable 12 months for Vipers goalkeeper Bashir Ssekagya. From being deemed surplus to requirements at KCCA to playing in the Caf Champions League for Vipers.

The young goalkeeper has shown he has the talent to succeed at a high level.
Having impressed while at UPDF last season, Ssekagya was snapped up by Vipers in the close season and featured for the club in the Cecafa club championship in Dar Es Salaam mid this year.

The club however also signed Burundian goalkeeper Fabian Mutombora who became the club’s first choice. It was therefore not until late November that the he finally made his league debut in a 2-1 win over Paidha Black Angels.
The games have thereafter come thick and fast with Ssekagya making his continental debut in the 2-1 first leg loss away to Sudanese giants El Merrreikh followed by three other games.

The youngster admits it was a nervous start to his life at Kitende but is now ready to help the team achieve its objective of reaching the Caf Champions League group stages. “Making my Caf Champions League debut was a unique feeling. I was very anxious before the game in Sudan,” he said.

He has since shown signs of improvement keeping clean sheets in the last two games with match winning saves in both.
He twice saved from Merreikh forwards Mohamed Abdel and Mohamed Hashim in the 1-0 return leg win while his block on Ruben Kimera in another 1-0 win against Police on Sunday launched the attack from which Vipers scored.

He now wants to help the side achieve its objective of reaching the group stages. “Whenever Vipers SC competes, it’s for the win. And since it was in the Caf Champions League, it’s what everyone — coaches, players and fans — want, and we battled on the field to eliminate El Merreikh,” he added.
