Individual class shines through

Kampala. The warm up period is over and now it is business time in the StarTimes Uganda Premie League (SUPL).

And Jinja side Bul is doing real business as they continued with their surprising run at the top after inflicting a 2-1 loss to Tooro United - the hosts first loss in Fort Portal.

Peter Onen’s side rode on goals from speedy forward Robert Mukongotya, who had previously engineered KCCA’s downfall with a sublime finish.

First it was KCCA on Friday to lay down a marker with a 4-0 humbling of Onduparaka at Lugogo in a one sided match that had Mike Mutyaba post the league’s first hattrick.

Each of the three goals he scored had different pointers to his attacking gift that keeps giving.
His partner-in-crime Sadat Anaku had opened the scoring with a goal that still has people talking.

It was reminiscent of Arsenal great Dennis Bergkamp’s flick on Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas in 2002 en route to scoring.

Anaku received a pass from Keziron Kizito with his back to goal, with Onduparaka defender Dudu Ramadhan keeping watch, or was he?

The striker then flicked the ball with his left back heel beyond a tumbling Ramadhan as he turned the other way round to slice it with the outside of his left boot past onrushing goalkeeper Yusuf Wasswa on 33 minutes.

Mutyaba did the rest as KCCA ended a three-match winless run to move up from 13th to seventh place on 10 points, a massive nine behind leaders Bul.

“It’s business as usual,” punched KCCA coach Mike Mutebi, “It’s just like we have not been playing well, no we’ve just not been scoring.”

Vipers, another title favourite that have now overcome a hazy start, destroyed Express with ease at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende with Fahad Bayo netting a brace in the 3-0 rout. He leads the scoring charts with six goals. The victory took Vipers to second place with 17 points while Express, who had won two successive games, remain on 10 points.

Vipers coach Edward Golola says he is now planning for the next two matches - against Kyetume and Busoga - at the end of which he hopes they will be in the driving seat.

Vipers are the only league side yet to test defeat and have somewhat started gaining the team shape and rythm - if the Express show is anything to go by.

Record league kings SC Villa could only manage a point off Douglas Bamweyana’s resolute Maroons.
URA’s mixed form this season saw them held goalless by Mbarara City at home in a match where the chances were few and far.

Equally beleaguered is Abdallah Mubiru’s Police side that fell 2-1 to nine-man Busoga United.
