KCCA missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Vipers after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Mbarara City at Kakyeka Stadium yesterday.
The reigning champions, who still have two games in hand had hoped to use the game to reduce the eight point lead between the two teams.
But the lead up to the game was dominated by the absence of KCCA manager Mike Mutebi on the touchline with reports suggesting he had been left behind after arriving late for the team’s departure. It proved to be a sign of things to come with the reigning champions taking a 1-0 lead through youngster Sam Ssenyonjo.
They then uncharacteristically failed to hold onto the lead on the bumpy Kakyeka surface with the impressive Ibrahim Orit levelling for Mbarara.
Swalik Ssegujja then doubled Mbarara’s advantage in the second half with the visitors also indebted to goalkeeper Charles Lukwago for keeping the score respectable.
The result left KCCA on 26 points, with games against SC Villa and Proline to come.

Mbarara ascend
The result meanwhile lifted Mbarara to ninth with 19 points in what was the third consecutive home victory since coach Brian Ssenyondo returned to the club.
“We got our Christmas. This is a good team we have been playing in fact the last three teams, have all been good teams. What I beg of the people here and our fans is that they should rally behind the team if sometimes the boys do not get results. The fans should not get annoyed with them. “This is a young team and they are learning as the season progresses,’’ said Ssenyondo
In Bombo, Cromwell Rwothomio scored deep into added time as URA defeated Proline 2-1 to move to sixth position.
Saidi Kyeyune gave URA the lead before Edirisa Lubega equalised for Proline, who remain bottom with one game to complete the first round.
