Mike Mutebi says no amount of fan hostility will change the way he does things after a handful of KCCA faithful accosted the manager at Kavumba on Tuesday.
Some fans approached the visitors bench, where Mutebi sat almost motionless, and hounded him with abuses in Luganda – a local dialect - as they demanded to know why he selects “wrong line-ups” among other accusations.
Some could be heard accusing him of being out to backstab KCCA so that he could “join Vipers” while others wondered why midfielder Nicholas Kasozi does not regularly start games. KCCA had just lost 2-1 to hosts Bright Stars.

“We know this job of ours, today you are appreciated, and another day you are not. But for me, I don’t work for the fans,” Mutebi exclusively told Daily Monitor, “Never.
“I work for a project for these players, and when these players do things right, they excite the fans, and when they don’t do things well, of course it will come back to us (coaches).
“But I cannot be affected by fans and what they are doing because they are not going to change what I’m supposed to do, I will always live by my own ideas, and nobody can change me.
“If maybe may the management of KCCA believe I’m not doing a good job, then I can always leave. But I cannot dance to the tunes of a few pockets of fans.”

Decision maker
On Kasozi not starting, Mutebi was firm: “I determine who plays, and that includes Kasozi, and Gift Ali, and that is a (anchoring role) position they are competing for. Currently, Gift Ali is doing better than Kasozi. If the right time comes and Kasozi is better, he will play.

“But this stuff of believing that some fans are going to select players is absolutely unacceptable. When we ushered in these young players, it’s the same problem I had when we had Allan Okello, Julius Poloto, Mustafa Kizza and the like starting out.
“Yes they suffered but that is because they were still growing. And now, eventually everybody is talking about them.
“Similarly, there are young kids from our development side that we have brought in, who we believe are going to be the next big thing for the club, and who actually understand the game and the culture of the club.”
