KAMPALA. The national under-23 team Kobs was on Sunday trimmed to 23 players as they entered camp in Njeru ahead of the first leg of the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifier first round against South Sudan.
With 40 players initially summoned, the final squad selected by coaches Wasswa Bbosa and Charles Ayiekoh has raised debate. But Ayiekoh remains firm in his belief that they have the right balance in the team to get the job done starting with tomorrow’s encounter at the Startimes ground in Lugogo.

“People’s opinions differ especially when you can select up to 10 teams with almost the same quality. But we chose the best players,” stated Ayiekoh who is working as assistant to Bbosa. The players are fit enough. The most important thing now is playing the way we want them to. The days we’ve had for preparation are enough,” he added.

The team comprising of largely domestic league players also includes Australian based Trevor Semakula, who can play on either wing.
“You can see that his football education is good and he has a good touch,” he said of the Edgar’s Academy Youth product.

The team also boasts of a number players that featured for the Under-20 team including Allan Okello, Julius Poloto and current league top scorer Joel Madondo. The second leg of the first round is expected to be played next week with the winner of the tie playing Tunisia in the second of the three round qualification.
