Kampala. The smiles are gradually returning to Wankulukuku under new coach and club legend George Ssimwogerere. Express yesterday moved closer to their 11th Uganda Cup title by overcoming the Police onslaught to win 4-1 via spot kicks after a barren draw.
Much credit for storming the quarterfinals should go to the Red Eagles custodian Mathias Muwanga who saved from Juma Balinya and Edgar Bwogi in the tension-filled shootout.
Michael Birungi, Disan Galiwango, Lawrence Kigonya and Tonny Odur stepped up to score their spot kicks for Express in a match that also served to heal the wounds inflicted by Police in the league at the same grounds recently.
“We are starting to play together as a team and we know what such victory means to our fans,” Ssimwogerere said.
Chances were far and few between in the 90 minutes with Birungi wasting a glorious opportunity while Police’s Balinya ought to have done better when faced with Express’ advancing goalkeeper.
The momentum from this triumph and the win at Nyamityobora in the league will, according to Ssimwogerere, be the driving force when Express take on Maroons on Thursday at Wankulukuku in their quest for respectable slots on the league table.
