New Cecafa president eyes instant change

Big Boss. Tanzania’s Wallace Karia (R).

What you need to know:

  • “We as Caf executive members will give them the maximum support to see that there are reforms and changes to make Cecafa better. We believe that the new team will succeed,” Magogo told Daily Monitor.

Upon being elected unopposed to the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) presidency yesterday at Silver Springs Hotel Bugolobi, Tanzania FA President Wallace Karia wasted no time in unveiling his grand plans to reawaken the regional football body.

He takes over from Sudan FA president Mutasim Gafaar whose four-year term ended in November, but with few tangible achievements.

“It is a big job but I believe with solidarity and collaboration with my fellow federation presidents, we can improve.

“We will make sure we will implement the new programs being discussed by members and I can assure you change is coming,” Karia, to be deputised by Francis Amin (South Sudan), Isayaz Jira (Ethiopia), Eyaza Abraham (Eritrea) and Jean Sekemana (Rwanda), revealed.

He added; “Teams must compete to get Fifa funds (Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan and Ethiopia opted out of the ongoing Cecafa tourney). My main project is youth activities for girls and boys.” Fufa president Moses Magogo, Souleiman Hassan Waberi (Djibouti) and Abdiqani Said (Somalia) are exempted from contesting for Cecafa’s executive positions because they are executive members of Caf.

“We as Caf executive members will give them the maximum support to see that there are reforms and changes to make Cecafa better. We believe that the new team will succeed,” Magogo told Daily Monitor.

The next Cecafa Senior Challenge tourney will be held in Sudan while the Kagame Cup Club Championship will be held in Tanzania.
