  • Mwebaze left behind an exciting crop of players to work with as he attempts to help a young side survive relegation. Only time will tell if Isabirye is able to keep this team from falling back into the lower division.

Kampala. The wild season at Nyamityobora has taken another turn as the club have reappointed Alex Isabirye their technical director. This comes following the club’s decision to accept Asaph Mwebaze’s resignation last week in the aftermath of the 2-0 defeat to Express at Kakyeka.

It has been a torrid season for Nyamityobora. The club came into this campaign riding on a rocky start exacerbated by playing at a foster home in Wankulukuku. Without enough quality, the Abanyakare soon parted ways with James Odoch following the 6-1 thrashing against KCCA at Lugogo.

The club policy was then to promote young players into the senior team, a thing that backfired. When Asaph Mwebaze arrived in December, he re-adjusted to the hard times at Nyamityobora managing to earn the team eight of their 12 points. His stint at the club was even faced with more challenges including threats from the fans especially after losing the Mbarara derby.

Through 11 games in charge, Mwebaze had won twice, drawing two and losing seven. The team looked vibrant especially in the surprise 4-1 beating of Police, though they remained suspect under his 78 day’s tenure.

After three back-to-back losses, Nyamityobora sit 15th on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League log and are hoping that turning back to Isabirye, who was with them in the 20117/18 season, will keep them alive. It’s a surprise that they are even able to turn to Isabirye.

The youthful coach has been one of the favourites for almost every job opening since making a name at URA. His return will apparently excite fans in Mbarara as they have fond memories of helping the team gain momentum in the 2017/18 Big League season.
