The ongoing Cecafa Championship is an audition for many of the domestic league players who many fans believe have done enough to be considered for the senior Cranes team.

The most prominent of those is KCCA’s Allan Okello who many think is perhaps too good to feature in the league let alone such regional tournaments. The forward gave credence to that notion on a day the Johnathan McKinstry-coached side again wasted several goal scoring opportunities, scoring a goal in each half as the Cranes took command of the five-team Group A.
Victory was the second in as many games for the Cranes who now have six points, three better off than Eritrea who subjected Burundi to a 1-0 loss, their second succession.

The two teams meet tomorrow in what will be Eritrea’s second game at the tournament. It could prove to be their hardest in the group if Okello turns up in the same mood after conjuring up two moments of incisiveness. The first was a snap shot from distance that bounced awkwardly in front of the Somali keeper after a slight deflection in the 28th minutes. By then the Cranes could have been out of sight after peppering the opposition goal with several attempts that Halid Lwalirwa and Fahad Bayo following Mustafa Kizza’s trademark pinpoint deliveries.

With Somalia who had almost equal number of fans at the StarTimes Ground building momentum, Okello struck again this time punishing them with a characteristically fine curling finish after cutting in from the right.
The goal in the 68th minute ended the game as a contest and had it not been poor finishing from Bayo, and substitutes Nicholas Kasozi and Vianney Sekajugo, the margin would have been greater.
