After 12 tension-filled matches and 42 goals in four days in the scorching sun at the Njeru Technical Center turf, Buikwe representatives Rays of Grace PS, under the Buganda Region flag, were declared the inaugural Odilo Fufa Primary Schools Competition on Wednesday.
They played with composure and assurance throughout enroute overcoming Oasis Annex PS (Arua/West Nile) 1-0 in the final to book their place in the annuals of history and a slot at the East African Games due mid this month.
According to Rays of Grace Director Robert Kiwanuka, the monumental success has not come on a silver platter but rather through long term investment in sports as they aim to dominate primary schools soccer, the way St Mary’s SS Kitende used to do at secondary level.
“Indeed this tourney was timely and I want to thank Fufa for the innovation. It found us prepared because we are also the Buganda champions in Airtel Raising Stars. We did what we do best - to lift the trophy,” said Kiwanuka.
Games Masters usually handle primary schools teams but for Rays of Grace experienced URA deputy coach Hamza Lutalo was in charge and you could see right from their 2-1 win over Citizen Parents PS (Kampala), similar score against Bright Valley PS (Gulu/Northern) and final win that they played with audacity and had a properly laid down system of play.
In the final, goal-hero Leonard Kasaana made the difference and there was no surprise that he made it to the national Under-15 side that is preparing for Cecafa Under 15 Boys Championship.
