Search for next Egypt coach begins, locals favourite for role

After the disappointment of not seeing their team in the final due Friday, following the defeat to South Africa in the Round of 16, the search for the next Egypt national team coach is on.
The Mexican, Javier Aguirre, who was only named Pharaohs coach last August, lost his Shs440m ($120,000) per month job after the 1-0 loss. His contract was set run until after 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
During his spell the team played 12 matches, winning nine, one draw and two defeats.

They scored 15 goals conceding seven. Aguirre is being accused of abandoning the free flowing football of Egypt, resorting to defensive and instead relying on counter attacking.
Local journalists and fans have urged the Egyptian FA to appoint one of their own citing failures by the last three foreigners; American Bob Bradley (2011-13), Argentina Héctor Cúper (2015-18) and Mexico Javier Aguirre (2018-19) who didn’t achieve much despite Cuper taking the Pharaohs to the World Cup last year in Russia after 28 years. The Argentinian was also in charge when Egypt lost to Cameroon in the final of 2017.

Egypt and Al Ahly legend Wael Gomaa blasted Aguirre, claiming that the Mexican has no personality. “Aguirre has lost all respect. He only took the Egypt job because he was jobless,” Gomaa said on beIN SPORTS.
Locals such as former Al Alhly players Hossam Hassan and Hossam El-Badry, now Director of Football at Pyramids FC, are the front runners.

However, Hossam’s volatile nature might make him miss out on the job .
Local coach Hassan Shehata, led Egypt to three successive African titles in 2006, 2008 and 2010 whereas Mahmoud El-Gohary, another legend, is considered to be one of Egypt and Africa’s greatest football icons guided the Pharaohs to the World Cup 1990.
