Up to 20 sides are expected to go head-to-head when the inaugural Guinness Five-A-Side football tournament makes a bow today at Fast Sports Fusion, a recently opened facility, located at Fifth Street Industrial Area.
The sides will have to part with Shs 300,000 for registration before getting a feel of the newly refurbished turf. There will be no room for licensed players to give ground for healthy and fair competition.
“The licensed players cannot take part in this one because they could suck the fun out of the event,” said Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) representative Kelvin Gumisiriza at the launch of the event on Friday in Kampala. Each side will be allowed up to four reserves to make it nine players per team. The launch was followed by a Five-A-Side game between the scribes and a UBL side which saw the latter walk away 11-4 comfortable winners on the night.
The innovation is also a starting point of many more competitions that could be hosted at the venue in future with games like basketball, volleyball, netball and handball all available. The one-day tournament is also expected to pave way for bigger things as Guinness are in the final stages of starting a Five-A-side league later in this year.
