Sseninde roots for glory in Uganda’s women football

Lady footballer Jean Sseninde is hopeful that the Crested Cranes is strong enough to compete at the Women African Cup of Nations, if good preparations are done early enough.
Sseninde, who plies her trade in UK, believes that women’s football in Uganda will reach its peak in 10 years and urges that many young girls need to be encouraged to participate so that they erase the mindset of many that football is only a man’s thing.
“Girls football is growing trend. There are a lot of things that we need to work on as players, Fufa, administrators and journalists. If we all do something, then we can get somewhere,” said Sseninde while speaking to media ahead of this year’s Sseninde Women’s Development Football Cup in Mbarara.
“Developing women football needs a concerted effort by all stakeholders. In the next 10 years we can be able to participate in the women’s Afcon because the national team is quite strong. It is important to start from the grassroot.”
The fourth edition of the Sseninde Women’s Football Tournament will, for the first time, be held at Kakyeka Stadium on August 24 with eight teams participating.
‘’It is a grassroot event aimed at creating opportunities for young girls and women to play football in and out of Uganda,” she said.
