There have been times this season when Vipers appeared to have lost trust in Daniel Sserunkuma with the striker now playing second fiddle to Fahad Bayo.
But with the latter away on national team duty with the Cranes, Sserunkuma showed he has lost none of his predatory instincts with the solitary goal as Vipers edged URA 1-0 at the St Mary’s Stadium.
The result allowed Vipers maintain their grip at the top of the 16-team log to 33 points, six points ahead of second placed Bul after 13 games, two short to conclude the first round.
Sserunkuma’s goal, his third this season, arrived midway through the second half after substitute Innocent Wafula drilled a low cross goal for the striker to tap home at the far post.
“I thank my players for the character and discipline they have displayed,” stated Vipers coach Edward Golola. His choice of words reflected the nature of the game with URA dominating possession and creating the better goal scoring opportunities.

Over the bar
The best fell to Daniel Isiagi at the start of the second half with the forward lifting his effort over goalkeeper Derrick Ochan and onto the crossbar.
“We were unlucky but you have to put away your chances when you are playing a team that is being aided,” Sam Simbwa the URA coach said of the result that leaves his team 10th on 14 points but with at least a game in hand on surrounding teams.
Elsewhere, Brian Senyondo marked his return to the Mbarara technical bench with victory as Solomon Okwalinga scored twice to hand his side a 2-1 home win over Onduparaka.
“The boys really worked for this game and we talked and said that this is the game that turns our season and I believe they have given their all to get the three points’’ Ssenyondo said of the result that was only their third this season. He has been in charge of two.
Wakiso Giants are meanwhile up to fourth following a 3-0 away win over Kyetume with Vianney Sekajugo again on the target.
