The 2019 edition of Buganda’s biggest football tournament the Masaza Cup is scheduled to start on June 1 with a showdown between Ssingo and Ssese. The chief guest will be the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi.

Unveiling this year’s tournament at Bulange, Mengo yesterday, the Minister of Sports, Youth and Recreation Owek. Henry Sekabembe Kiberu observed that there will be heightened attention to hooliganism and safety.

“Last season we had isolated cases of hooliganism and we will not allow this to happen,” Sekabembe told journalists yesterday.
“Let us promote fair play because football calls for fairness and humanity.”

Each team will receive Shs5m and five balls but there will be more facilitation as and when sides advance in the competition.
“We shall help the teams because we want to see an improved tournament and greater standards of football from last year,” he added.

The minister noted that the Masaza Cup’s image had been hurt by accidents involving teams and fans and that organisers will engage relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that this year’s tournament moves smoothly.

“Life is very important and we wouldn’t want to have the mishaps of last year happening again so we want to ensure safety for everyone including fans moving from one ssaza to another.”
The defending champions are Singo.
