UMU first into Pepsi University Football League semifinals

KAMPALA-Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) became the first team to reach the semi-finals of this season’s Pepsi University Football League (UFL) ejecting two-time champions Makerere University Business School (Mubs) in the second leg of the their quarterfinal duel in Nkozi yesterday. UMU, also the 2017 champions, claimed a 2-0 second leg win following the first leg goalless draw last week.

They were however indebted to goalkeeper Amir Nalugoda who dived to his right to deny Herbert Abima from the penalty spot awarded on 45 minutes by referee Lucky Kasalirwe who adjudged that Munir Said had been fouled in the box. Uganda Martyrs victory came courtesy of two goals the first an own goal in the 48th minute after MUBS goalkeeper Isaac Mulindwa failed to keep out Robert Ssentongo’s corner kick as the slipped into the back of his net.

The second was a beauty with Kafumbe Masuudi controlling the ball just outside the box before sending a screeching shot into the roof of the net in the 68th minute.
Mulindwa could simply do nothing to stop the ball.

This is MUBS fourth appearance at the semifinal stage out of the last five seasons including the 2015 final that they lost to Mubs and the 2017 final during which they avenged their loss to Mubs by defeating them to lift the title.
Tomorrow, YMCA Comprehensive Institute host St. Lawrence University in the second leg of their tie. St. Lawrence have a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.
