Uganda have edge over Zambia in Victoria Cup

The Rugby Cranes play host to the Zambia in their third Victoria Cup encounter at Kyadondo Rugby Club on Saturday.
It’s the first time the sides will be meeting since 2007 in the World Cup Qualifiers, just a week after Cranes’ monumental 20-19 win against then World Cup bound Namibia.
The other two meetings had one come in 2003 in Lusaka and the first in 2001 in Kampala.
Of the three ties, Uganda has managed two wins with the first being a 21-12 victory 2001, the next would come six years later in 2007 with a 5-21 score in Zambia. Zambia’s only victory against Uganda came in a 44-17, giving Uganda 3-1 advantage in the head to head record.
Cranes coach Robert Seguya has had a glimpse of the Zambians playing and he was all praise.
“I have watched clips of their (Zambia) against Zimbabwe and they are a descent just lacking experience at Africa’s top level,” said Seguya.
Apart from Zambia, the other three Victoria Cup sides in Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe all belong to the top tier that is Gold Cup while Zambia are a tier below in the Silver Cup. The Victoria Cup originally had Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe but Zambia was included this year to give them exposure at that stage. Zambia have lost all two games of the campaign, 39-10 against Zimbabwe and 23-43 against Kenya to leave them bottom of the log.
The return of back Ian Munyani and back row Brian Asaba to fitness will give Seguya some selection headache as he prepares to unveil his 23-man match day squad today. Desire Ayera’s five star performance against Zimbabwe might see him push for a place in the starting 15 on Saturday.
