Kampala. Brian Umony and Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye were the players expected to add spark to Express when they unveiled their five mid season signings in January.
Umony, a former league top scorer was expected to benefit from Tumwesigye’s creativity to get the goals for the six-time league champions and 10-time Stanbic Uganda Cup winners.
While it has taken a bit of time for that to happen, the pair showed a glimpse of what they can offer combining for the game’s only goal as Express reached the Stanbic Uganda Cup semi-finals at the expense of Bul.
A moment of trickery from Zaga allowed him to escape his marker on the byline to set up Umony who connected assuredly with his left foot for a second minute lead at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium.
It was one they held onto comfortably in what turned into a scrappy encounter with Bul resorting to long range strikes from Pierre Kambale who twice tested Express goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga.
Davis Mayanja then missed a chance to double Express’ lead deep into the second half making up his mind to shoot late when left with only goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo to beat.
Express now join Bright Stars and Big League side Kyetume as the other semifinalists.
Another Big League side Proline and reigning Uganda league champions Vipers face off today for the final slot.
