What you need to know:

  • But Villa improved after the break and got their reward when Amir Kakomo and David Owori struck, the latter with a neatly executed lob to secure victory.
  • It is their off the ball work however that caught the eye more as evidenced as Owori initiated the second goal after retrieving possession.

That every cloud has a silver lining is a phrase many of the Villa faithful could have stuck too as the club occupied the relegation places for much of last season.

It is however not until the new season has that lining begun to appear for the record 16-time league champions.
The Jogoos no longer have any star players to speak of and this has allowed the unlikely coaching combo of Edward Kaziba and Ibrahim Kirya to freshen up the squad.

“The team is getting to the level where I want it to be we’re now operating at about 58% and there’s a lot we have to improve. Every game shows us where we need to improve. By that I mean we play as a team without relying on individual brilliance. So we have to improve the way we attack and defend,” Kaziba explained.

That work ethic was again on show as Villa moved into second position on the Uganda Premier League log following a 2-0 home win over Wakiso Giants in the Wednesday late evening game at the Mandela National Stadium.

The result left Edward Kaziba’s charges level on 15 points with Onduparaka and one point behind Bul to complete a surprise trio at the top of the table.
For Villa in particular, the return represents an 11 point increase from last season having collected just four points from as many games.

“Our players have a lot more belief now even though sometimes they make mistakes during games but they are now also following instructions. By doing that, that’s how we have managed to get such good results,” Kaziba responded when asked about the team’s start to the season.

They made a slow start against Wakiso who had Hassan Ssenyonjo, Tom Masiko and Chrisestom Ntambi dominating in midfield while goalkeeper Saidi Keni was called into action to thwart Vianney Ssekajugo and Karim Ndugwa.
