Can a jet wash damage shock absorbers?

Jet car washing may be popular but that does not mean that your vehicle’s engine is suitable for this kind of wash. Some engines are very sensitive and may be damaged by water. Sometimes using a piece of cloth to clean the engine is all you need. Photo Rachel Mabala
What you need to know:
- Hello Paul, I drive a 2007 Mark X. Every time I take it for a thorough underbody wash, the shocks start making noise the next day especially on humps. Could the washing be affecting the suspension or is it just a coincidence? Ronnie
Hello Ronnie, the thorough car underbody wash of your Toyota Mark X with a jet spray most likely affects your shock absorbers and causes the unusual noise you have noted. Shock absorbers are designed to work with rubber or vinyl boots and dust covers, which prevent the intrusion of dust and water as you drive in multi-terrain and weather conditions, including wading through puddles of water.
If these rubber boots or dust covers get torn or damaged due to ageing, the water and dust will penetrate the shock absorbers’ seals and start to make the irritating noise.
The water intrusion is more intense during prolonged jet washing at the washing bay. While dirt is dislodged, some of it may intrude on the shock absorbers through the damaged dust covers.
This will also compromise the shock absorber lubricant to cause frictional and corrosion damage besides making noise.
You can mitigate this problem by inspecting your shock absorber rubber boots and dust caps during service. Also discuss with your car wash technician to be careful or adjust the jet spray pressure when washing near suspension or shock absorbers.
