The Mazda CX-5 may not be the most common Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Ugandan roads, but after spending four hours test-driving it, I can confidently say that it challenges the idea that luxury and performance are exclusive to high-end brands. If you are in the market for a stylish, fuel-efficient, and practical vehicle that offers both comfort and capability, this SUV is worth considering.

At first glance, the Mazda CX-5 stands out among its competitors. Although it is not as widely seen, its growing popularity speaks volumes about its reliability and appeal. First introduced in 2012, the CX-5 is now in its second generation, with the 2018 model providing a great balance between modern design and performance.

Before buying

If you are considering a 2018 Mazda CX-5, it is important to remember that it is still relatively new by Ugandan standards. With an average mileage of around 30,000 km, you might need to replace essential components such as tyres, brakes, engine oil, and coolant upon purchasing. This is especially crucial since vehicles imported from abroad may have been used under different road and weather conditions that may not match Uganda’s terrain and fuel quality.

Power and efficiency

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 offers three engine options:

- 2.0L petrol engine: Ideal for city driving and occasional road trips.

- 2.5L petrol engine: Provides more power while maintaining efficiency.

- 2.2L diesel engine*: Delivers excellent fuel economy but is slightly noisier and has that distinctive diesel smell, particularly noticeable when starting in the morning.

Although the CX-5 has a raised ground clearance suitable for rough terrain, most versions utilise front-wheel drive (FWD) rather than four-wheel drive (4WD). However, as long as your tyres are in good condition, the vehicle can handle most roads with ease.

Mujib Tusuubira, a car dealer from Mujib Exotics comments, “The diesel version offers better fuel economy and is perfect for long-distance travel.”

On the highway, at a steady speed of 80 km/h, the CX-5 consumes approximately seven litres per 100 km, thanks to its efficient six-speed automatic transmission.

During my test drive across Kampala and its outskirts, including Nakawa, Jinja Road, Nsambya, Ggaba, Munyonyo, and Entebbe, I achieved an average of 14 km per litre due to the unpredictable traffic conditions.

Interior

Step inside the Mazda CX-5, and you are greeted with leather seats and a modern infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A heads-up display (HUD) digitally shows your speed, so you do not have to glance down at the speedometer.

For added convenience, the electronic handbrake is activated with the press of a button. Stuck in traffic? Simply engage the hold function, and the car stays in place until you accelerate again.

Rear passengers are not left out, either. The spacious back seats come with dedicated AC vents, giving them control over their climate settings.

Safety is a priority in the CX-5, with features such as cruise control, lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist, six airbags and rear cross-traffic alert, which warns you when reversing near obstacles or vehicles.

Maintenance

Like any car in Uganda, the CX-5’s maintenance depends on how often you drive and the quality of fuel you use. A minor service every 5,000km costs around Shs300,000, while a major service (including suspension and tyres) can go up to Shs2m, though this is rare.

Unlike German cars, the CX-5 can be serviced by any qualified mechanic.

Price

The price of a 2018 Mazda CX-5 in Uganda is approximately Shs90m, but this is negotiable depending on the model year and dealer.
