Super Custom is the best car for a tour business

The Super Custom has remained on Uganda’s roads because it was made with the full-time four wheel drive (4WD) that keeps the wheels moving forward under tough conditions. PHOTO | STANLEY MUKOOZA

For these three readers, buying a Super Custom is a decision they do not regret. However, they all agree that since it consumes a lot of fuel and is expensive to maintain, using it for business is the smartest move.

I bought the Super Custom because I thought it would be ideal for a transport business venture that I wanted to go into. It is extremely comfortable and it can handle all road terrain since it is a Four Wheel Drive.
Secondly, because my wife and I are artistes, it is common to be called for gigs upcountry. With the Super Custom, we are good to go. It has good ground clearance and definitely fits my style of driving. I am a good driver, who loves speed, especially when the road is clear.
My Super Custom has a 3000cc diesel engine. Therefore, it is a bit of a fuel guzzler but because the cost of diesel is lower than that of petrol, I manage to handle the fuel costs.
I spend between Shs350,000 and Shs380,000 on service. I have not had a lot of issues with this car despite many saying it is difficult to handle. Also, on occasions where I want to move with my entire family, we have plenty of room.

Although I have recently sold my Super Custom, I had had it for more than two years. I bought the Super Custom because I am the owner of a primary school and I would use it as a shuttle since it can carry up to eight people.
I did not have issues with the car until it started breaking down, a problem my mechanic attributed to the malfunction of the Electronic Control Unit. He also said that 1KZ engines, which my car had, are not good and that k1Z engines are stronger for a Super Custom.
Some Super Custom drivers also complain about overheating but fortunately, I did not get this issue with mine. My mechanic said this comes with radiator complications.
Another problem with the Super Custom is that because of its fuel consumption, its resale value is bad yet it has the same sitting capacity as the Toyota Hiace, commonly known as the drone.
However, the drone has great technology and friendly fuel consumption.
I stay in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, but I always had to fuel with Shs20,000 in order to drive to Kampala City Centre, which is expensive for such a journey.
Service is also expensive because diesel engines demand a little more care than the petrol engines.
Lastly, a Super Custom is a good car if you want to use it for hire or to ferry tourists.
However, you must have a trusted mechanic and all service and repairs need to be done on time. Another advantage is that its spare parts are readily available in shops around Kampala.

I bought my Super Custom two years ago because I wanted to get into the tour business. I had always been hired as a driver by friends who own tour companies so I decided to buy my own in order to increase my earnings.
The one thing I have noticed is that it is not an easy car to maintain and it needs a reliable, knowledgeable mechanic to work on it. The reason people find issues with this car is because many people never give their cars the necessary care or carry out repairs on time.
I spend between Shs350,000 and Shs400,000 on service and this I do sometimes even before the recommended kilometres have elapsed.
For the adventurer, the Super Custom also has extra cargo capacity, making it a comfortable sleeping and hang-out spot under any weather conditions.
Basically, the van is ideal for any road trip.
Since it consumes a lot of fuel, it is ideal for, say, a tour and travels business since those who hire the car also fuel it.
However, the Super Custom is hard to park, especially in Kampala City Centre where there is limited parking space.
Also, because of its high fuel consumption, if you are thinking of buying the car, then you should use it for business since this way, you are able to earn the money for fueling and service.
