The right car for campaign trail

Over the years, vehicles have proven to be the fastest and most efficient tools for political campaigns. While some politicians have an entire motorcade, others rely on a single car. But what type of vehicle is best suited for navigating your constituency?

Former Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga, advocates for a sport utility vehicle (SUV) equipped with a sunroof, suitable for navigating rough terrain. He says such a vehicle allows candidates to address crowds at organised rallies or make spontaneous stopovers at trading centres without the added cost of setting up elevated stages. He emphasises that the choice of vehicle should align with the campaign strategy and the size of the constituency.

“Not all rallies are planned. Sometimes, you come across a gathering of your supporters unexpectedly. In such cases, the sunroof serves as an instant platform to communicate your message effectively,” Karuhanga explains.

He also points out that in areas where a vehicle is unnecessary, walking door-to-door helps candidates engage directly with voters. “Many voters expect their leaders to drive luxurious cars without considering the financial burden. Do not succumb to such pressure, as it may strain your resources. I campaigned in my Subaru without any issues. Use what is within your means,” he advises.

Cost considerations

Campaign budgets are often tight, making fuel-efficient vehicles with engine capacities between 2000cc and 3000cc ideal for rural campaigns. These cars reduce fuel expenses, which remain high at approximately Shs4,800 to Shs5,000 per litre. Karuhanga stresses that a fuel-efficient car is cheaper to maintain and enables extensive travel across villages without excessive costs.

Bernard Onen Odoi Mutusa, the Youth MP for Eastern Region, recommends a double-cabin pick-up truck for its versatility and convenience. “Campaigns involve teamwork, and a pick-up allows you to transport both your campaign team and materials efficiently. The rear tray [bed] can accommodate 10 to 20 supporters, saving costs on additional vehicles,” Onen explains.

Right size

A raised vehicle, such as a pickup truck, ensures smooth navigation across all terrains. Smaller cars may struggle on rough roads, leading to breakdowns. Karuhanga suggests vehicles such as the Subaru Forester (2007 models and above), Toyota RAV4, or Toyota Harrier, which offer raised ground clearance and can handle diverse terrains. Due to increasing market competition, many car manufacturers now produce larger vehicles with smaller, fuel-efficient engines that perform as well as or even better than traditional big-engine cars.

Mechanical insights

Alvin Nkini, a mechanic based in Bunga, Kampala, advises candidates to assess the terrain of their campaign areas before selecting a car. “A Toyota Premio is ideal for relatively flat districts such as Masaka City but unsuitable for hilly regions such as Kabale or Rukungiri, where a four-wheel drive (4WD) is necessary,” he notes.

Once the ideal vehicle is identified, candidates should evaluate their budget and consider additional costs, such as the type of tyres required. Urban tyres differ from those used in rural or all-terrain conditions.

Nkini further emphasises the importance of vehicle servicing before campaigns begin.

“If your mechanic is based in Kampala and you will be campaigning upcountry, ensure the car undergoes a full service well in advance. If the campaigns start in late 2025, with elections in early 2026, have the car checked at least six months before to monitor performance and wear and tear,” he advises.

Warning

He warns against purchasing a new car and immediately using it for campaigns without first understanding its functionality. “A car from the bond might break down unexpectedly,” he adds.

For candidates campaigning in areas with marrum roads, Nkini cautions against excessive speeds.

“Although your car may reach speeds of 180km/h, driving at 160km/h on rough roads can lead to rapid wear and tear. Most imported cars are designed for specific road conditions different from Uganda’s. Avoid pushing your vehicle beyond its limits,” he concludes.
