Why has my gearbox failed?

My Mitsubishi Outlander has an automatic box that works with first and second gears and then the paddle shift has to be used to get third and fourth. Is this a simple or expensive fix?  Patrick

Hello Patrick, the extent of damage occasioned to your Outlander’s automatic gearbox will determine how complex or costly it will be to repair.  An automatic transmission or gearbox uses hydraulic transmission fluid to engage the planetary gears, lubricate the fast moving parts to improve their performance, clean, as well as cool the gearbox internals. The first port of call when trying to establish cause of automatic gearbox malfunction is to get a technician to check or inspect the condition and level of hydraulic fluid.

Low transmission fluid level will not allow all gears to shift normally. If the mileage of your Mitsubishi exceeds 100,000kms, it most likely is due for a transmission oil and filter replacement. Ensure there are no transmission fluid leaks at the pan seal or electric socket.

Often, automatic transmission failure is due to neglecting the periodical transmission fluid service. The INVECS auto transmission on your car could have faulty electric solenoids for gear three and four. A computer diagnostic check would help you identify faulty valve block solenoids or transmission computer failure if the fluid checks and service are okay.
