President Museveni has commissioned newly constructed urban roads in Kasese Municipality worth Shs54b.

The 12 municipal roads and links, which measure about seven kilometres, are part of the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) programme.

Speaking at the launch in Kasese District on Wednesday, President Museveni said government would continue to build roads in urban areas, noting that government was now able to construct trunk roads that have linked different regions across the country.

The President also highlighted the need to improve household incomes, which would be vital for stabilising families and communities against poverty and ensuring that they are integrated into the money economy.

“We need to support our communities at the grassroots to improve their household incomes first. Then they can educate their children, and we shall have a productive community for all,” he said.

The USMID programme, worth $360m, was funded by the World Bank and government, constructing more than 100 kilometres of urban road networks across 33 local governments.

Mr Chance Muhindo, the Kasese Municipality Mayor, said at least Shs54b had been spent on the construction of the seven-kilometre road network, noting that the Municipality had been recognised for effective utilisation of funds under USMID.

“We now request that Kasese Municipality be included in the next urban infrastructure programme,” he said.
Lands, Housing and Urban Development Minister Judith Nabakooba highlighted the infrastructure gains realised under the USMID, noting that Kasese Municipality was among the top performers under this USMID programme, with the new road network already enhancing business operations.

The road network will be key in enhancing property development, business diversification and local government revenue collection, among others.

Kasese Municipality Member of Parliament Ferigo Kambale stated that as MPs, they would oversee the infrastructure.

“Kasese is now very different from what it was before. We are now ready for more private sector investments,” he said.
