UCC lists 26 firms operating illegal postal, courier services

Kampala. Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has warned about 40 postal and courier services companies, saying they risk closure or face legal action if they do not stop operating illegally.
In a notice published early this week, UCC said that out of 63 companies offering postal and courier service, only 21 are licensed while others are either partially or not licenced at all.
Key among the unlicensed companies, according to the UCC notice are Yellow Pages Express, Quantum Express Logistics, Avant Garde Distributors and a number of bus services companies.
“We have accorded the illegal operators a grace period of three months from the date of publication of this notice within which to regularise their operations,” reads in part the notice, warning the UCC will act against any illegal operators after the grace period has expired.
Mr Ibrahim Bbosa, the UCC head PR and international relations on Wednesday told Daily Monitor yesterday they had been engaging postal and courier operators to “help them comply and work within the law but this has not been done”.
“It’s not that we want to put people out of business. This is the reason we are notifying them to pay up their licences. This is for the credibility of their businesses in the event that people’s properties are lost,” he said.
After the three-month grace period, Mr Bbosa said, UCC will, under the law, be forced to act on those that have refused to regularise their operations.
According to the UCC Act, any company that illegally operates courier or postal services can be suspended or have its licence revoked. Mr Bbosa said using illegal companies potentially exposes clients to losses.
