Trade ministry to review govt policies as Uganda eyes $500b GDP

Trade minister Francis Mwebesa

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives is set to convene a meeting with the private sector and civil society to review trade policies, identify challenges, and unlock new opportunities to boost Uganda’s economic performance as the country eyes $500b GDP by 2040.

The two-day conference which starts on March 26 at Speke Resort Munyonyo will also be attended by members of the academia and development partners who will be required to assess Uganda’s trade landscape and explore strategies to enhance economic growth.
It's part of the government strategy aimed at propelling Uganda’s GDP from the current $53 billion to $500 billion by 2040, according to organisers.

"This conference is an opportunity for us to listen to all stakeholders to obtain their views on how to position Uganda and build trade competitiveness that will contribute to the ambitious 10-Fold Growth Strategy for economic transformation. The Government of Uganda is committed to achieve this strategy in line with the National Development Plans and Vision 2040,” said the Trade minister, Mr Francis Mwebesa.

Discussions will focus on standards and quality infrastructure, Market Access Opportunities, Reducing import dependence, Trade Financing, and Digital technologies for trade, and SMEs Growth.

Ms Anna Nambooze, the Country Director of TradeMark Africa (TMA) through which the Foreign Common Wealth Development Office (FCDO) is sponsoring the event said the conference is aligned with her organisation’s goal of growing prosperity through increased trade.

"We are glad to facilitate the Conference which will provide a platform for constructive dialogue between the private sector and government. We look forward to the Conference fostering strategy and mutually agreed actions aimed at creating a dynamic and inclusive trade environment,” she said.
