2024 had some chaotic scenes
What you need to know:
- A-Z: It is that time of the year when the sQoop team summarises how the entertainment industry has been the whole year. Isaac Ssejjombwe and Andrew Kaggwa break it down for you in alphabetical order, looking at the highs and lows, the headliners, the newcomers and everything entertainment.

A - AI: Did you think A would stand for Alien Skin? Of course, he did a lot to self destruct this year, but he has not been able to dominate news more than AI. From the beginning of the year, when Azawi released her single Masavu, AI became a topic of discussion after some smart Ugandan decided to throw departed Moses Sekibogo alias Moze Radio’s voice on the song. This threw the artiste onto the defence to prove she actually composed her song as rumours had started spreading that it was one of the songs the late left unreleased.
There were other AI generated songs such as Uga Boys’ Namulabako where Radio’s voice was still added as well as Alien Skin, Bobi Wine and King Saha.
B - Blu*3: No, they did not reunite. Okay, they kind of came together and had a brilliant concert with lots of hiccups. But then got an extension deal with Talent Africa where festivals and show organisers could book them as Blu*3 for shows.
And that has worked out so well that the girls have been booked for many of the biggest events this year culminating the entire throwback narrative of 2024.
C - Chameleone: It is hard remembering a time this letter has not been Jose Chameleone. The man always finds ways of being in the news, if it is not for the music, it is for slapping someone. This year, he has been a mixed bag handed to us, from people complaining about him overstaying in bars late in the night when his contemporaries Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine are home with their families, to a groundbreaking performance
at his Legend in Gold concert at Kampala Serena Hotel, to being admitted to hospital at the end of the year. His hospitalisation saw his son Abba Marcus come out asking for public intervention, saying his father has been struggling for years with substance abuse. We cannot also forget he has been a topic of discussion since his wife came out as a domestic abuse survivor.
D-Daniela: Of course this is D coming after C. At the beginning of the year, Chameleone’s wife, who until this year many thought had been relocated to the US by her husband, broke the socials when she came out to address her struggles with domestic violence for the years she was married to Uganda’s doctor, and champion.
In a series of posts, Daniella Atim said Africa’s number six used to beat her from six to six without resolve. She rubbed many people the wrong way but continued sharing, even setting up a YouTube channel at some point. Much as she stopped talking about their marriage, what she said has followed not just Chameleone but the Mayanja family almost every time there is a milestone, whether it is Weasel or Chameleone’s concert, the abuse finds its way in the narrative.
E - Ex: Throwback concerts have carried 2024. It is a year we abandoned our current artistes for the ex. Surprisingly, most of these events were so successful via execution and attendance.
We had Blu*3, Iryn Namubiru, Hajj Haruna Mubiru, Mesach Semakula, Ronald Mayinja, Amooti, Lord Fred Sebatta, Jose Chameleone and Allan Toniks, among others, all staging concerts this year.
F - Fangone: We cannot deny that Alien Skin and his Fangone group have still managed to rattle feathers. Both in disruptive and illegal ways. If their boss is not attacking someone or attacking everyone in an interview, he will be walking with them to a hospital to cause havoc. That is how he is ending the year with a good Catholic boy’s haircut.
G -Gloria Bugie. She is a newcomer in the music industry but unlike other newcomers, Bugie, real name Gloria Busingye, made headlines after the release of her nude video which caused a lot of excitement among the men and disappointment among the women. She was later summoned to Jinja Road police where she spent a night after events promoter Abbey Musinguzi, alias Abitex, filed charges against her under the Computer Misuse Act.
H -Looking for ways of fixing Hajj’s saga.
I - Isaac Ssemakadde: The President of the Uganda Law Society is one who is close to the arts sector in many ways. This year, the man has done more than banging tables, called out people, including activists and yes, the man has his own way of life; have you seen the twins he walks with?
J - Janzi: It is crazy how Janzi, which is a grasshopper family, has had Ugandans confused for long. Remember it was a band at first, then it became a musical instrument, an award show, a very confusing concept... Then it became an official manufacturer of Uganda Cranes, She Cranes balls, kits and training gear. What happened, however, the launch landed on rocks, people criticised the design and in a snap, people online had created their version of better kits.
K - Kisaati: A trend brought to the masses by one Albert Katruguma, was mainly about the Aloha shirts made famous by holidaymakers in Hawaii. The phrase kisaati became so popular that a song by Mun*G, Kisaati Masavu was released and later got a remix.
L- Lil Pazo: When he released Genda Ogule Emotoka, he was easily written off as a one hit wonder. Then he did many forgettable songs and some that did not reach radio stations. At the beginning of the year, he lamented that Ugandans do not like sensible music and that he was going to record some weird music to make money. Then we had Enkudi. Basically that is all he did this year but captivated the internet with his comical interviews and opinions.
M - Masanyalaze: Ugandan music has been politicised, from the time Bobi Wine bounced his way into parliament and later on the ballot as a presidential candidate. It is believed that at times, you need his blessing to attract numbers to your concerts. Thus, through the year, a number of artistes promoting shows seek his endorsement, which the streets loosely call masanyalaze. For some like Mikie Wine, the masanyalaze
worked wonders, while for others such as Big Eye, there was masanyalaze but no poles.
N - Na mutima: There is something about Ugandan artistes, when one of them embraces something and it seems to work, they jump onto the trend. This year the trend was supporting Uganda Cranes, for Pia Pounds and Azawi, it may have been for her sheer love of the sport, but then others started falling over themselves to share pictures of themselves in the Cranes kit. Talking about the kit, did you see J?
O-Ozambeee- We are not sure how much the original version garnered on YouTube but the remix of Ozambee featuring Mudra has managed to get 9.3 million views in just six months.
This is not an easy reach for any artiste but D Star has managed it. It could be Uganda’s most listened to song this year and the artiste with this one song became a household name in East Africa.
P-Phiona Nyamutoro: Well, this could be sQoop and we are talking about creatives not politicians but it is hard remembering one thing Kenzo did right this year than loving Nyamutoro. She became a minister and somehow the man in a frenzy announced they were a couple. After that, she has been on his lips like a toothbrush, he has been seen in some of her meetings, rallies and he has even rallied support for her party president, Yoweri Museveni, thus going against his belief of artistes staying away from politics. In a nutshell, had Nyamutoro been out of Kenzo’s life, it is hard to imagine if there would be much to write about him. She has been way more recognizable than anything he has recorded this year.
Q -Queen Sheebah: Self-proclaimed Queen Karma, Sheebah dominated this year with several headlines. She had a concert where she revealed her pregnancy, it later emerged she allegedly got pregnant for a man who had a family and considering herself to be a feminist, she was criticised for allegedly breaking up a happy family.
R-Rita Dancehall: The dancer has dominated headlines after her appearance at Dexta Daps concert at Cricket Oval. She was criticised for her dresscode and sexual dance routine and this comes after she had excluded herself from being among the people who dress indecently.
S - Samuel James: You probably have no idea who Samuel James is,well,we also do not.But that is because no one calls him that, he is known as Mzungu Boda; he came, he saw and caused havoc.
T- Town called China: If you are a shopping buff, definitely you have heard about China Town, they came, opened and we followed, in big numbers.
U-UCC: The Uganda Communications Commission came out and officially announced the suspension of controversial songs such as Enkudi, Dooze, Okwepiicha, Enyama, & Omunio by Lil Pazo and Gravity and also reminded stakeholders that in accordance with Stage Plays & Public Entertainment Act and regulations made there under, concert organisers are requiredto obtain permits from UCC.
V - Vulgar music: If there was one thing that got the masses, it was the quality of music, not necessarily the production values but the content. Most of the music released this year was about things that take place in bedrooms.
W: Wrestling but soft: If you have been a resident of the social streets you may have bumped into a video of Ugandans wrestling on the ground. It is called the Soft Ground Wrestling complete with all the drama and gimmicks. It gained a lot of popularity that wrestler Cody Rhodes promised to get them a professional ring.
X - It is hard finding things to assign a letter X. Nothing usually happens here.
Y - Well, it is one of the letters we fall short but let us not forget Ugandans decided to walk to parliament to protest corruption and guess who was vocal about it online – Azawi. That
fight got KFM and NTV presenter, Faiza Fabz thrown in jail.
