It might have been a jazz show but someone else managed to grab many people’s attention as much as the main acts.
Academy award winning actress got people’s attention as Lupita Nyong’o as she got up and started dancing. While she did so, she proved that she is good at wiggling the waist and moving it to the rhythm.
Hugh Masekela was playing one of his favourite numbers from 1968. The Kampala Serena Hotel audience was on its feet. Jazz has been defined as a music genre for the A-Class and perhaps rightly so.
Masekela and Isaiah Katumwa brought a lot of warmth, interaction and collaboration to their jazz music fete last Friday. The two saxophonists jazzed up the full house.
At some point, Katumwa invited musical friends Maurice Kirya, Maureen Rutabingwa, Myco Ouma, Charmant Mushaga, and when they started doing their thing, the audience was left in awe and duly clapped and smiled in satisfaction, to good music.
Good chemistry
More than anything, Katumwa and the legendary South-African born Masekela made sure that their instrumental delivery was as powerful, and sometimes emotional, as the message relayed through the tracks they did.
The sax players also pulled off some really fine strokes and proved their vocal prowess too. Masekela was quite something when it came to dance.
Whenever they did high notes, the audience blew up in excitement, sometimes clapping to the beautiful rhythms. In the audience were many respected individuals from politicians, business personnel, artistes and dignitaries.
The stage setting was unique. It was fitted with beautiful artwork, encircled with concrete plant verses and screens to relay the performances to everyone in the audience.
“Ladies and gentleman, it is good to be back in Uganda. I would like to thank you for supporting my young brother Katumwa. He has a generous heart,” Masekela said.
