The ultimate excuse for Soul music lovers to go wild this Christmas

December is a party month. It is the month when we celebrate the birth of Christ, a worthy reason indeed, but we use that as an excuse to indulge in all sorts of partying. If months had feelings, they would all envy December for being loved by party goers. For hosting so many parties. If it is not the usual end-of-year parties in all the corporate companies, it is weddings, baptisms, house parties, family get-togethers and so on. As I write this, on a Wednesday, there is an introduction ceremony right now going on in the large home 50 meters away. On a Wednesday. That is unheard of in any other month.

For some reason, we are all in a mood for some debauchery (is this too strong a word) while celebrating the birth of the holiest man to ever live. It sounds ironic but then again, Christ’s first miracle was turning water into wine (at the insistence of his mother by the way) so it may not be as ironic as it sounds.

And so, every December, we go about coming up with all sorts of excuses to drink and make merry a lot more robustly than at other times. As expected, alcohol is the main attraction in these December parties because what kind of party doesn’t?

Other than the fact that Christmas has over the last 2000 years influenced the whole month to become one huge endless party, it is also probably because it is the evening of the year and we are all winding down after hustling like meerkats all year around. But to be frank, December just feels cheerful for some reason. The heavens release grasshoppers, the air feels different, the sun is warmer, even the dust on our streets feels friendlier. You can just feel it in the air, come rain or shine. And so, there is that. People can’t help but be a great mood.

Soul and RnB Experience

Which brings me to this year’s most anticipated event by lovers of old-school Soul and RnB music. Scheduled for December 21, the Soul and RnB Experience is the ultimate excuse for people to party all day and night. The glitzy event will happen Saturday. In keeping with the December tradition of endless partying, the gates will open at midday and will keep open indefinitely through the night and morning of December 22. The main attraction at the event needs no introduction in some circles.

DJ Milo

There is a superstar DJ in South Africa named Milo. Like ‘mile’ but with an ‘o’. He has been a DJ for over 15 years. During that time, he has enjoyed considerable fame in his country as a master of his craft. Then about three years ago, he started sharing his crazy mixes on social media and suddenly his brand exploded and his fame blew up across the rest of Africa like a wild fire. He was recently in Nairobi and he blew it out of the water.

DJ Milo known for his keen ear for old school Soul and RnB music. You have probably looped his videos on YouTube and seen his clips on Tiktok. His passion for these particular genres is undeniable. Ask any true Soul and RnB connoisseur on the continent and they will likely be very familiar with DJ Milo. His YouTube channel is inundated with glowing praises (from across the world) for his skill at the tables but even more praises for his great looks. The hunky, youthful DJ is coming into town to headline this event and he will be flanked by our own legends of the turn tables, DJ Bush Baby, DJ Cacie and Star Boy.

The open-air event will be a one-of-a-kind sing-along affair, perfect for lovers and lonely hearts alike. We all know how Soul and RnB music favours those two categories. Isn’t it interesting that all great music is about love and break ups? Like why are break up songs so good?

Anyway, the party will also feature stage performances from Janzi Band and Ssewa Ssewa, an upbeat break from all the love-dovey ballads from the 80s and 90s. And of course a much needed beer break for the DJs.

Attendees can expect a day and night filled with drunkenly singing along the best music ever created, mouth-watering BBQ, and of course the ultimate excuse to imbibe and make merry. A true gathering of kindred hearts.

And when this party is long gone and you drive to your village for Christmas, your heart will be at rest knowing you took a short break from all the bubble gum music that we have come to endure these days. You will remember kissing your lover while singing along to Whitney Houston’s Could I have this Kiss Forever or Des’ree’s I am Kissing You and some other such gems. After that shindig, one can have all the conversation starters to last them through the rest of the endless December parties both in the village and back in town.

Is it too early to say Merry Christmas? I say it is never too early.
