Proposals are now a whole production; dress right!

Once upon a time, an engagement proposal in Kampala meant a quiet dinner, a shy “Will you marry me?” and a blurry photo taken by the confused waiter. Fast forward to 2025, and things have changed. A Kampala proposal now has the energy of a Netflix special, complete with drones, photographers hiding in bushes, Joseph Sax emerging from nowhere, and a crowd of strangers clapping like they rehearsed it.

So, if your friend says, “Let us go for brunch” and insists you wear heels “just for the vibe”, you might want to get your nails done. We have officially entered the “proposal season” of our adult lives and people are not playing. What used to be private, intimate moments are now full-blown productions, complete with scripts, location scouts, matching outfits, and a guest list.

Let’s talk outfits

Ladies, you do not want to be the one in crocs and sweatpants when your bestie gets proposed to at Le Chateau and you are in every photo looking like you were on your way to the supermarket.

If there is even a slight sign of a proposal in the air, consider these your go-to looks: A satin or cotton midi dress; either flowy, flirty, and just dressed up enough.

Add some low heels or cute mules, to this. And do not forget your accessories like some bold earrings and a little tote. Your other option is a jumpsuit as this is the fashion girl’s secret weapon. Elegant but effortless.

To elevate the look, opt for a wide-legged detail for the bottom part and a cinched waist. While bandage dresses may not be as trendy as they once were, they are still a solid choice for a night like this, especially when styled with a killer pair of heels and standout accessories. Now, for the men, there are some great options for you as well, seeing as many like to show up in Arsenal jerseys.

Respect the moment

Go for a smart-casual vibes with a crisp button-down (linen if it is hot), tailored chinos, and loafers or clean sneakers. This look says, “I respect the moment” without being over the top. Your other alternative could be a lightweight blazer, worn over a polo tee, that gives the look just enough polish. This look is also perfect if the proposal ends up being at one of those rooftop bars with fairy lights and a live band. The no-no’s here include anything from Graphic tees, crocs, rubber slippers, overly ripped jeans, biker shorts and those tiny crop tops.

The proposal is not happening to you, but your face will be in 12 reels and 48 photos. Look, proposals in Kampala are no longer just a moment; they are an experience.

Whether you are the one getting proposed to, a background hype friend, or just there for the champagne and cake, one thing’s for sure: dress like you might end up in the carousel on Instagram. Because these days? You absolutely will. Kampala lovers are not doing casual love anymore. And honestly, neither should your outfit.
