What you need to know:

  • An invite could not pass me to go and experience Kibaale Lodge. I share what stood out for me in the forested place.

As a self-proclaimed homebody, I rarely find joy in leaving the comfort of my home. But, when an invitation to visit Kibaale Lodge in western Uganda came my way, I knew it was an opportunity I could not pass on. A glance at their website revealed breathtaking views of the property, and from that moment, the countdown to my departure began.

Nestled on a ridge with stunning vistas of the Rwenzori Mountains to the west and the Queen Elizabeth plains and Kazinga Channel to the south, Kibaale Lodge is a hidden gem in Uganda’s growing tourism landscape. This luxury property, the fifth in the Volcanoes Safaris portfolio, seamlessly blends natural beauty with upscale comfort, making it a must-visit destination.

My journey

My journey to Kibaale Lodge was not without its challenges. Due to a navigation error, our drive stretched from the expected five hours to an exhausting 10-hour ordeal. For anyone planning to visit, I recommend the Fort Portal-Kyenjojo or Masindi-Hoima-Kibaale routes, which typically take about six hours from Kampala. Also, endeavour to arrive during the daytime as the lodge’s remote location makes nighttime navigation tricky.

At the lodge

Upon arrival, my fatigue quickly melted away. The lodge’s breathtaking views and warm, inviting atmosphere were an instant remedy for the long journey. We were warmly welcomed by the team, led by the charismatic lodge manager, Tonny Kayanja.

Kibaale Lodge features eight bandas (read cottages) and these thoughtfully designed accommodations provide a perfect balance of privacy and tranquility. Each banda boasts spacious interiors, outdoor showers, and decor that combines rustic charm with modern luxury. The rooms include a lounge area, a main bedroom, and even a daybed for relaxing. Adding to the comfort is a fireplace in each banda, which your butler lights before bedtime, ensuring a warm and cozy night’s sleep.

The lodge’s main building is a communal space that exudes a homey vibe, perfect for sharing meals and stories with fellow guests. As Kayanja explained, “We integrate local cuisines with exotic dishes, ensuring our guests enjoy a unique culinary experience each day.”

Cuisine

The dining experience is nothing short of exceptional. Each day brings a new menu, meaning you are served with a fresh new meal each day. Guests can choose between communal dining, which fosters lively conversations and connections with other guests, or private dining for more intimate moments. Local delicacies such as firinda (bean stew prepared without seed coats) and kalo (millet bread) offer a delicious introduction to the region’s rich culinary heritage.

Wakeup call and sunrise

A standout feature of Kibaale Lodge is its personalised butler service. Our butler, Peter, was attentive, creative, and truly went above and beyond. One morning, I requested a 6am wake-up call to catch the sunrise, which he had recommended as a must-see experience. To my surprise, he woke me with a hymn, outside my banda and for a split second, I thought I had crossed to the other side and was hearing the sound of angels singing.

“It is important to wake up guests in a calm manner to start their day positively,” Peter explained with a smile.

Morning walk

Our first day began with an early morning walk led by our guide, Saidi. He took us to Lake Lugembe, where we encountered a variety of bird species and learned about the lodge’s conservation efforts. These include an impressive tree-planting initiative that has seen more than 200,000 seedlings of shrubs and trees planted to date. Later, we indulged in complimentary massages at the spa, a much-needed relaxation after the long drive we had had the previous day.

Summit walk

In the afternoon, we embarked on the summit walk, a 30-minute hike offering spectacular 360°- views of Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Kazinga Channel, the Rwenzori Mountains, and Kibaale Forest. For adventure seekers, the lodge is just a 30-minute drive from Kibaale Forest, which offers chimpanzee trekking, another activity you could add to your itinerary.

Inclusivity

Kibaale Lodge’s commitment to sustainability and community integration is evident throughout its operations. The lodge employs a significant number of staff from the surrounding community and actively partners with local schools such as Sand Guru and Pere Schte which has the Roots and Shoots program that was founded by renowned conservationist Jane Goodall. Guests are encouraged to support these initiatives, making their stay memorable and meaningful.

“Through our Volcanoes Safari Partnership Trust, we aim to promote conservation and uplift the community. For instance, we train locals in bird-watching tourism, providing them with skills and employment opportunities,” Kayanja explained.

Create memories

For honeymooners and families, Kibaale Lodge goes the extra mile to create unforgettable memories. From private dinners and local dance performances, every detail is carefully curated to celebrate special moments.

As my time at Kibaale Lodge came to an end, I realised this was far more than just another safari lodge. The attention to detail, seamless blend of luxury and nature, and genuine hospitality create an experience that lingers long after you leave. Whether it is waking up to the sound of nature right outside your window, embarking on nature hikes, or connecting with the local community, Kibaale Lodge offers a transformative escape from the ordinary.

For anyone seeking serenity, adventure, or simply a place to reconnect with nature, Kibaale Lodge should be at the top of your travel list.

As Kayanja eloquently put it, “Here, you get peace of mind, fresh air, and a sense of connection with nature and community that you won’t find in a bustling city or even in Dubai!”
