Has television mounting replaced the wall unit?

For small spaces, mounting the TV on the wall helps to maximise space

What you need to know:

  • Wall units have since evolved and what we see in many homes today are TV mountings on  walls. While people used to keep a lot of stuff in the sitting room, today, many prefer spacious rooms that can allow in more fresh air and light.
  • Despite being pricey, the time when many homes owned wall units is now a thing of the past.

Do you recall the days when side boards were actually TV stands? The sideboards then were used as a storage facility for cups, plates, glasses and cutlery that our parents kept for visitors.
Before long, sideboards disappeared into oblivion and small ones were on the market to accommodate the TV, DVD player, Cable TV and CDs on the sides. It didn’t take long for exquisite wall units to be ushered on the market. They came in different shapes and designs.
A wall unit has space for TV and more drawers for accommodating books, awards and other decorative components that range in style from contemporary to traditional, in order to match the decor of the home or business establishment.

Evolution
Wall units have since evolved and what we see in many homes today are TV mountings on  walls. While people used to keep a lot of stuff in the sitting room, today, many prefer spacious rooms that can allow in more fresh air and light.
Despite being pricey, the time when many homes owned wall units is now a thing of the past. Has the TV mounting replaced the wall unit?

Safer option
Andrew Mbabazi, an interior designer with Ayodele Innovations Limited, says TV mounting has become a fashionable and trendy décor item.
Mbabazi says for a person with toddlers, TV mounting is a safer option. However, it depends on the amount of space one has in the living room.
He explains that mounting the screen is secure and one can have it at any height they desire. It works in both small and wide spaces.
For small spaces, Mbabazi says mounting the TV on the wall helps to maximise space usage and as such, eliminate the need for a TV console. A TV console is a piece of furniture on which the entertainment pieces are kept.
The size of the console may be smaller when one mounts a screen on the wall.
However, for tenants, who have to constantly shift and move in between places, the cost of moving becomes high with a wall unit as opposed to TV mounting.

Entertainment console
Unlike before where the wall unit contained and performed various functions, the dining cabinet can be separate with TV mounting place and it does not have to be attached to the entertainment console.
Mbabazi says an entertainment console has its advantages such as having a focal point or signature centre in the living room, which allows you more storage space, especially if you have more items to display such as vases, photos and other décor pieces.
Just like one mounts a TV on the wall, décor pieces can also be mounted on the wall using floating shelves to place movable items such as vases, photo frames. If you do not like mounting things on the wall, an entertainment console is ideal.

Avoid crowding the walls
Mbabazi says it is advisable to use an entertainment console to avoid crowding the walls. The entertainment console allows you a variety of décor options as opposed to TV mounting.  On the other hand, this option works best when you are a home owner and not renting. On whether TV mounting has replaced a console, the preference is per individual also depends on what is trending or not.
