Why am I so gassy during my period?

Although menstruation periods are meant to be normal, there are many things that make girls during this time very uncomfortable and wish they never had them at all

What you need to know:

  • Many women crave sugary or fatty foods during their periods, as these help boost serotonin, the feel-good hormone

I often feel very full in the stomach and pass a lot of gas, especially during my periods. What causes this, and how can I manage it? It is uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing. Please help. Anna

Dear Anna,

Feeling full in the stomach with frequent gassiness is often due to abdominal bloating caused by excessive gas in the digestive system. Everyone produces some gas, typically passing it 12–23 times a day. This gas mainly originates from digestion, fermentation by gut bacteria, and swallowed air during eating or drinking. Several factors can increase gas, including eating quickly, consuming large amounts of gas-producing foods such as beans, or health issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance and constipation. The body may struggle to expel all this gas comfortably, leading to a bloated feeling.

However, since you experience this mostly during your periods, hormonal changes are likely playing a role. In the days before and during menstruation, levels of hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate. These changes can slow digestion, causing constipation or diarrhoea and may also increase abdominal gas and bloating. Additionally, many women crave sugary or fatty foods during their periods, as these help boost serotonin, the feel-good hormone. Unfortunately, such foods can contribute to gas buildup, exacerbating symptoms.

To manage this, consider a few lifestyle adjustments. First, limit your intake of fatty and sugary foods, especially around your period. Eat slowly to reduce swallowed air, and incorporate more fibre to regulate digestion. Drink plenty of water to help keep your system moving. Regular physical exercise also supports bowel movements and diminishes bloating. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a health professional to rule out underlying issues such as food intolerances or bowel disorders. For most women, however, dietary changes, exercise, and staying well-hydrated can make a significant difference during this time of the month.
