Will eating eggs increase my chances of getting pregnant?

Doctor, I am 31 years old and decided to get a baby. Is it true that eating eggs will increase my eggs (ova) and improve chances of a quick pregnancy? Amina

A woman is born with all the ova (1-2 million), she requires for her reproductive lifetime. The ova however, are immature and a bid to mature, many get destroyed so that by puberty, a girl may have about 300,000 eggs only.

Every month a girl after puberty will try to mature one egg while thousands will die so that by 30 years, she will have only 10 per cent of her original number of eggs. Therefore, a woman’s fertility largely depends on her age.

Healthy foods (plenty of greens, whole grains, lean meats, nuts, fresh vegetables, and fruits) though improve overall health, they also help ova to remain healthy hence improving overall fertility of a woman. It is best that these foods are eaten right from the mother of the girl and then the girl to improve fertility of both the mother and her daughter.

Eating healthy foods when one has clocked 30s and already having fertility issues may not be as useful as starting fromthe womb.

It is not only eggs which are involved in preserving fertility of a woman and eating too many eggs is likely to raise one’s cholesterol with lots of fertility and general health implications.

A human requires less than 300 mg of cholesterol a day (an egg is around 186 mg of cholesterol).
