A 15-year-old boy living with disability from St Jude Primary School in Bardege-Layibi Division, Gulu City has scored Aggregate 11 in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

“I can’t believe I have got the first grade that means a lot to me and my future dream of becoming an accountant. My condition limited me from moving during my studies but my colleagues and teachers helped me move to and from class every day,” Ambrose Nono, who lives with his mother in Bungatira Sub-county, Gulu District, said yesterday.

“However, without prayers and hard work, this would not  have also happened, I am confident about the future but my condition always keeps me thinking that I can only suit a career as an accountant in future,” he added.

Nono is one of six out of 38 pupils at the school who scored First Grade in the 2024 PLE. The best pupil at the school scored Aggregate 7. His elder brother, Vincent Olanya, says: “My brother’s performance proves that disability is not inability. He always gave us hope even when we thought it would not happen. His determination and attitude to studies was always good.” Mr Francis Nyeko, the school head teacher, said Nono “had numerous challenges during study time from mobility, access to meals, classes, hygiene and access to washrooms, and in each of these exercises, his colleagues needed to help him move.”
