The Ministry of Education and Sports has set February 20th and 21st as the dates for senior five selection. The Minister for Education and Sports, Ms Janet Museveni, made the revelations while releasing the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results yesterday at State Lodge, Nakasero, Kampala. Uneb last year conducted two sets of examinations; one under the new lower secondary curriculum and the other under the old curriculum to enable the learners who failed the 2023 UCE to transition to A-Level.

Ms Museveni asked the selection committee to ensure that the 2024 cohort of candidates who took the UCE examination under the old curriculum and qualified for post-UCE placement are not left out during selection. “The first term reporting date for the senior five class of 2025 is March 3, 2025,” Ms Museveni said. The lower secondary curriculum was rolled

out on February 3, 2020, before the closure of schools in March of the same year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Under the new grading system, A signifies exceptional achievement, followed by B for outstanding performance, C for satisfactory, D for basic, and E for elementary.

In 2020, the Ministry of Education rolled out the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) for the lower secondary school level. This introduced the need for assessment reforms, incorporating new components such as Continuous Assessment (CA) and Project Work, in addition to the existing End-of-Cycle examination.

According to data from the Executive Director of Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) Mr Daniel Odongo, 8,113 candidates who sat for the 2024 UCE examinations passed and 1,629 failed the examinations out of the 9,742 candidates who registered to sit the examinations.

Uneb also revealed that 350,146 which represents 98.05 percent of candidates that sat examinations under the new curriculum passed and their transcript indicates Result 1.
