What you need to know:

Nkumba is one of the first private Universities to open in the country and has registered dramatic growth raising the need for expansion.

Nkumba University has embarked on a fundraising drive to raise some Shs5bn to construct a modern Administration block to accomodate the growing demand for infrastructure at the Entebbe based institution. The building, administrators say will house the University secretary’s offices, academic registrar, chancellor, a modern auditorium and the Vice Chancellors office among others.

Efforts to raise the cash, according to people involved in the initiative will among others include fundraisng dinners. A program seen by this newspaper shows that businessman Gordon Wavamunno, the Chancellor will host one such event on 9th this month.

“The dinner is part of an ongoing process towards infrastructural development in respect to lecture rooms as well as other structures vital to the academic development of the University,” said Assoc. Prof. Hannington Ssengedo, the Deputy Vice Chancellor.

While the country has seen a dramatic increase in private for profit institutions over the last two decades many still rely on voluntary contributions and initiatives to raise much needed cash for expansion and growth.

Many still complain that tuition charged is far below cost of their operations to afford private funding of infrastructures. Established in 1994 as a University, Nkumba grew out of a group of schools and colleges which originally grew from a kindergarten set up in 1951.
