12-year-old boy killed, 12 others injured in Kisoro road crash

A tragic road accident in Kisoro District on February 8, 2025 claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy, Irakoze Bright, and left 12 others, all juveniles, injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 pm in Mupaka Village, South Ward, Chahafi Town Council, along the Kisoro-Chahafi-Gahenerezo Road.
Kigezi Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the fatality, stating: "We regret to confirm that a fatal accident occurred in Kisoro District, resulting in the death of a 12-year-old boy and injuring 12 others. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims."
Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle involved, a Mitsubishi Fuso with registration number UBN 328X, was overloaded and possibly suffered from mechanical failure, which may have contributed to the crash.
The injured victims include Bayizere Mark (9), Niyomuchamanza Gerald (12), Murengezi Daudi (9), Iratuzi Nafutari (13), Hakizimana Medard (9), Niyongabo Joab (13), and Niyongabo Patrick (8), along with five other children whose identities have yet to be established.
The victims were rushed to Chahafi Health Center IV and Mutolere Hospital for medical treatment, with their conditions still being assessed, authorities said.
The damaged vehicle has been towed to Kisoro Central Police Station for further inspection.
ASP Maate assured the public that inquiries are ongoing, stating: "We will do everything possible to support the families of the victims and ensure that those responsible are held accountable."
As investigations continue, the local community mourns the loss of young Irakoze and hopes for the swift recovery of the injured.
